  10 Day DeLuxe Castle & Manor Houses: Itinerary

Day 1 :Independent arrival at Copenhagen Kastrup Airport or group flight from the USA / Canada.
Proceed to the Hilton Airport Terminal Hotel for overnight. Meet your tour manager / escort. Rest of day free to go into town on the train (12 min.) to explore Tivoli Gardens, "Strøget" street or Nyhavn the cosmopolitan harbour district.

Day 2 :An old fort- New Art- grand spots along Øresund
Kronborg Castle After an early breakfast we embark our luxury coach at about 9am. Drive along the Øresund costal road north of Copenhagen. First stop is the small coast town of Rungsted. Our destination is the house and estate of Baroness Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), author of "Out of Africa" who was born here in 1885. After a brief visit we continue to another costal town Humlebæk where our visit is to Louisiana, a world class "Museum of Contemporary Art" and exhibition venue of outstanding artists. The magnificent garden has numerous sculptures of world known artists, including several of Henry Moore. An ideal spot to take an independent lunch on the terrace with a great view of Øresund Strait, with Sweden on the other side. We carry on to the town of Helsingør. Our destination is Kronborg Castle, the enormous defense fort of Prince Hamlet fame. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was built in 1420 and renovated in 1585 by King Frederik 2nd. Here we see the historical rooms and collections as well as the gruesome Casements below, where a statue of Holger the Dane contemplates state affairs. Time permitting, a visit to Fredriksborg Castle in Hillerød, before going to Hotel Store Kro (Inn) in nearby Fredensborg. Dinner at the Inn of Danish traditional dishes.

Day 3 :On a fast ferry to board an old battle frigate.
Frigate After an early breakfast we leave Sjælland on a fast ferry across Kattegat to 700 year old mini-city of Ebeltoft, on the east coast of Jylland Peninsula. Here we take a guided walking tour of the cobble stoned streets visiting the cute little city hall, the Glass Art museum and last, but not least, the longest wooden ship in the world, the restored battle frigat "Jylland". Independent lunch. In early afternoon we proceed to the barok Clausholm Castle for a brief visit, if time permits, before proceeding to northern Jylland, to village of Tylstrup and Gl.Vraa Castle for overnight. 2 nights. Dinner.

Day 4 :Tip of Denmark where the Seas meet.
After an early breakfast we drive north to coastal town Skagen, a fishing and artists town, and a brief visit to Grenen, Denmarks Northernmost point. Independent lunch back in Skagen town. Return to Gl.Vraa Castle in Tylstrup and participate in a cooking Lesson. Dinner is what was prepared by participants.

Day 5 :North Sea fishing town on sand dunes.
After a leisurely breakfast we drive south along the west coast of Jylland where the mighty sand dunes protect the coast against The North Sea. Brief stops at fishing town of Hvide Sande and Billund, to visit Legoland amusement park. Independent lunch at Legoland. In the afternoon we continue with a stop in town of Kolding to visit Koldinghus Castle and, time permitting, Trapholdt Museum of contemporary Art. Then on to Middelfart on the island of Fyn where we overnight at Hindsgavl Castle. 1 night. Dinner of Danish specialties.

Day 6 :Dropping in on the Count and his Castle
Count After a leisurely breakfast a short drive to village of Kværndrup and one of the most imposing estates in Denmark, Egeskov Castle owned by Count Ahlefeldt. It dates from 1554 and the Count has added numerous features, including a maze, walk-among- the treetops and a veteran auto museum, all in the vast park. Picnic lunch. In the afternoon we carry on to city of Odense perhaps with a brief stop in Nr.Lyndelse village, to see childhood house of composer Carl Nielsen whose works are still on the repetoire of most symphony orchestra‘s in the world. Our destination is Knudsen‘s Gaard Hotel for 2 nights. Dinner. Rest of the evening at leisure to explore Hans Christian Andersen‘s birth town.

Day 7 :The poet, the composer and Odense River cruise
Hans Christian Anderson After breakfast, a guided walking tour of the central area visiting poet Hans Christian Andersen‘s Museum, Carl Nielsen‘s Museum, Cathedral of King Saint Knud and the Brandt Galleries of Photo and Media Art. A picnic box lunch of "open face sandwiches" can be eaten on a river launch through Odense River viewing the backyards of large city residence‘s, to "Den Fynske Landsby" (Old Village), a collection of village and farm buildings from around Fyn dating to 1800, and operated today in style of the period. Dinner in Sortebro Kro (Inn), in the Village.

Day 8 :Real Viking ships from the bog. Royal Tombs In the Cathedral
After an early breakfast we leave island of Fyn via Nyborg visiting Nyborg Castle dating back to 11th. century and extended by King Christian 3rd. in 1550. Then across Store belt (the Big Strait) between Fyn and Soælland on the enormous bridge, that along with the Sealink between Copenhagen and Sweden, are two engineering marvels that now connect Europe with all Scandinavia. We carry on to Roskilde, former capital of Denmark, and home of The Cathedral containing the tombs of Danish royalty dating back to King Christian 1st. in 1460. Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next, in Roskilde we visit the largest collection of Viking Ships, all dug up from the bogs near town. Time permitting, a brief visit to Ledreborg Castle just outside town. The finest example of Rococco building and landscaping. It was buildt in 1740 under King Christian 5th. by Count Holstein, and has been owned by the Holstein-Ledreborg family since then. The halls and rooms contain a very large cultural collection of period furniture, artifacts and over 600 paintings. We finish the busy day in a latter-day castle, the Hilton Hotel Copenhagen airport, where we stay 2 nights.

Day 9 :The Palace and Royal baubles, the Glyptotek
Rosenborg Castle After a leisurely breakfast we commence a guided tour of Copenhagen visiting Rosenborg Castle, housing the Crown Jewels, then Amalienborg Palace, Queen Margarete‘s Residence. A guided tour of the Palace Museum which contain precious objects of historic and cultural value. This tour concludes with Changing of Palace Guards and is our last castle visit. After an independent lunch in Nyhavn Harbour and time permitting, we visit The New Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum containing the largest Collection in Scandinavia, of ancient European history and the "Golden Danish Age" -they are but a few of the over 10.000 Object d‘Art on display. Glyptoteket is also an art exhibition venue, and we will likely catch the current event. Rest of day at leisure. Independent dinner perhaps in Tivoli or back at Hilton Hotel.

Day 10 :All must come to an end ---- farvel, god rejse hjem
End of tour program. After breakfast walk to Terminal for flight home (or other arrangement).   Back
